伝達動詞（reporting verb）は、発言・説明・考えなどを伝える動詞です。say that …、tell someone that …、explain something to someoneのように、動詞ごとに後ろの形が変わります。5つの基本パターンを中心に、例文で確認しましょう。

最初に押さえる5つの型

同じ動詞が複数の型に入ることがあります。下の一覧は「この型だけしか使えない」という分類ではありません。that節は「主語＋動詞」を含む節、to不定詞はto＋動詞の原形、動名詞は-ing形です。

1．that節を続ける16項目

say・tell・explain：人を置く位置に注意

自然な英文	日本語訳	注意点
She said to me that she was busy.	彼女は私に忙しいと言いました。	say me that …とはしない。伝える相手の前にto。
She told me that she was busy.	彼女は私に忙しいと伝えました。	この用法のtellでは相手を目的語にする。
She explained the rule to me.	彼女は私に規則を説明しました。	explain me the ruleとはしない。
She explained to me that the rule had changed.	彼女は私に規則が変わったと説明しました。	that節で説明する内容を示すこともできる。

tellにはtell a story（話をする）やtell the truth（本当のことを言う）もあります。「tellの後にはどんな場合でも人が必要」という意味ではありません。

promise to doとask someone to do：誰が行動するか

She promised to help.は彼女自身が手伝う約束です。She asked me to help.は私に手伝うよう頼んだ文です。She asked to leave.なら、彼女自身が立ち去る許可などを求めたことになります。toの前に人があるかを確認しましょう。

否定の指示はtell someone not to do。He told me not to wait.は「彼は私に待たないように言いました」です。promise someone that …は使えますが、人＋toの一覧の動詞と同じ感覚で置き換えないようにします。

suggest・proposeと、提案を表すthat節

suggest doingまたはsuggest that＋主語＋動詞を使います。She suggested taking a break.やShe suggested that we take a break.が自然です。「私に休憩するよう提案した」をsuggested me to take a breakとはしません。

提案・要求のthat節では、They suggested that he leave early.のように動詞の原形を使うことがあります。They suggested that he should leave early.という形もあります。一方、事実を主張するHe insisted that he was right.では通常の時制を使います。insistやsuggestが何を意味するかでも後ろの形が変わります。

propose doingは提案を表し、propose to doには「〜するつもりである」という用法もあります。原形はpropose、過去形・過去分詞はproposedです。一覧では原形を覚えましょう。

前置詞が入る型：前置詞の後ろは動名詞
